Jaws Suffocates illegal operators in Mahikeng

The North West Provincial Road Traffic Management, Jaws Special Unit has impounded 27 motor vehicles in Mahikeng for illegal operations.

Impounded vehicles included sixteen light utility vehicles which were operated as illegal taxis, twelve drivers without licenses and six cars with expired license discs. In total fines issued were worth R 44 000 and vehicles will be released once fines are paid fully.

North West MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari said the operation is part of the Department’s resolve to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.

“We want to send a strong warning to those operating without licenses, all those who break the law and all those operating as ta s illegally that days lawlessness are over”, said MEC Lehari.
MEC Lehari said the Department would not allow people to be transported with vehicles that do not have operational permits.

“These people put the lives of our people in danger and the department would not allow the situation were people’s lives are deliberately being put in danger,” said MEC Lehari.

He said the Department will continue to ensure that people are transported in safer vehicles and that whoever wants to operate as a taxi should apply and follow application protocols. MEC Lehari encouraged operators to work closely with the Department to ensure illegal operations cease to exist.
